Routine dusting is an extremely important part of maintaining a clean, healthy home. Weekly dusting is usually frequent enough to keep surfaces clean, maintain good air quality, and minimize allergies, although homes with pets may need dusting every few days to keep dust and dander in check.
It’s also important not just to dust often enough but also to dust properly. Here are four dusting tips for your home:
- Use a Dry Microfiber Cloth – It’s best not to dust surfaces with a wet cloth. This makes the dust stick together and cling to the surface, so you end up just pushing it around instead of removing the dust on the first try. Use a dry microfiber cloth since it will pick up more dust more easily than regular cotton cloth.
- Dust Top to Bottom – Gravity means that when you dust light fixtures, the tops of cupboards, or other high areas, dust is going to fall onto the surfaces below. If you start dusting from the bottom, you’re going to end up undoing some of the work you just did, so start from the top instead and work your way down.
- Don’t Forget the Vents and Air Filters – Vents and air filters trap a lot of dust over time, which can be detrimental to your indoor air quality. Make sure your vents get cleaned and your air filters get replaced routinely.
- Vacuum Afterwards – When you’re done dusting with a microfiber cloth or another dusting tool, remember to vacuum. Definitely vacuum the floors, and if your vacuum has attachments then use them for furniture like sofas and chairs.
